More about the Woodlane Ishinryu Dragons

The Dragons are our younger Karate students aged from 5 to 12 years old.

Woodlane have run child-friendly Dragon classes at the Harold Hill Community Centre since 2021, and we run classes every Monday and Thursday from 5:45 p.m.  Each class runs for an hour.  Students are free to train at either (or both) classes in any given week.

We train throughout the year, including during school holidays.  We take a short break (about 2 weeks) over the Christmas period, but apart from this we train throughout the year.

Established Dragon students pay £6 per session on a pay as you go basis.  We have concesssions for family members (from the same household) training together.  For example, a brother and sister training together in the same session will only pay £10.

Other costs – Established students are required to pay a membership fee to the Ishinryu association.  The annual cost is £32 and includes third-party insurance as well as membership to our governing body – the EKNGB.

We also teach adults, and a general class runs from 7 p.m. Modays and Thursdays (immediately following each Dragon class).  Once they have gained a coloured belt (through a formal grading process) we encourage our young students to progress into the general class if they wish to.  Some even train in both classes on the same evening.

Our instructors – Our head instructor is sensei Chris Vant (5th Dan) assisted by Chris Fennessy (4th Dan).  Both hold enhanced DBS certificates and are fully insured to instruct.  The other essential member of our team is Pearl – our Safeguarding lead.

We care very much about our younger students

We take Safeguarding very seriously at Woodlane, and our club holds an accreditation from the Safeguarding Code in Martial arts.  Pearl is present at every lesson and is always available to care for (and to reassure) our younger students.
